Kathmandu: Nepal Police is working to bring to justice those involved in arson, looting, vandalism, and other violent incidents that occurred during the Gen-Z protests on September 8 and 9 in various parts of the country, including the Kathmandu Valley. For this, the police have requested the public to provide evidence.
When the initially peaceful protests turned violent, damage was inflicted on the physical structures of the legislature, executive, and judiciary, as well as the residences of top leaders and various provincial, district, and municipal offices.
The police have asked citizens to share any photos, videos, or social media links related to the incidents at [email protected]. They assured that the identity of those providing information will be kept strictly confidential.
During the protests, rioters set fire to and vandalized security agency offices and looted weapons, communication equipment, and other assets. Police have urged those in possession of such items to return them by contacting local police or security agency offices, the District Police Office, Police Control 100, toll-free number 16600141516, or the Nepal Police Headquarters at 9851293459. The public has also been requested not to misuse police uniforms seized during the protests and to provide information about them.
With the formation of an interim government, many protest-related photos and videos are going viral on social media. Police are preparing to arrest those involved in vandalism, looting, and arson based on these materials as well as CCTV footage.
Social media and smartphones played a crucial role in identifying suspects during the pro-monarch protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 15. Police have said they will adopt the same model this time.
Taking advantage of the unrest, various individuals and groups entered government and public offices, homes, and commercial establishments, setting them on fire and looting property. District administration offices have also issued public notices urging the return of stolen goods during the Genji movement.
Some administration offices have reported that food, goods, cash, and other items were looted through vandalism, arson, and theft. They added that suspects are being identified and arrested through photos, videos, and CCTV footage shared on social media. Meanwhile, some commercial establishments, including Bhatbhateni, have also requested the return of looted items.
