Arson at Satungal Data Center Disrupts CG Net; Services Partially Restored

Kathmandu: Chaudhary Group’s CG Net, which was shut down after a fire broke out at its Satungal data center, has gradually started coming back online.

On September 9, during the Gen-Z protests, demonstrators vandalized and set fire to CG Park in Satungal. CG Net’s data center, along with most of the equipment needed to run its internet service, was located there.

The fire and vandalism destroyed the data center and burned essential equipment, including fiber cables and routers, rendering them useless. Although internet service was restored this morning, it is not operating at full capacity or speed. The company is working to restore infrastructure to its original state within the next two days. Multiple teams have been deployed nationwide to facilitate service, with technicians actively working in the field.

CG Net’s Marketing Manager, Prafulla Rijal, confirmed that services resumed this morning.

“There was heavy damage to the data center, which made it impossible to resume the internet immediately. Our technicians called a water tanker on their own to control the fire. Only after that did we begin setting up again,” Rijal said.

The company has also announced plans to compensate customers for the disruption.

CG Net’s call center, which was damaged in the fire, has resumed operations. During the outage, customer complaints were handled through chat support. The company’s billing system is also back in operation.

CG Net had a warehouse in Satungal that stored routers, cables, and other equipment. All of it was destroyed in the fire. The company is now managing new supplies and plans to resume expanding services to new customers from Tuesday.

After the Satungal data center was destroyed, CG Net shifted operations to another facility in Nawalpur. However, as the Nawalpur data center alone could not handle the load, the company is working to restore Kathmandu’s internet services by reviving the Satungal center.

“We are working very hard to restore services. So far, no customer has left CG Net. Our team is actively working to return services to their original state,” Rijal said.

The company has not yet assessed the total damage from the arson attack. Rijal said restoring internet services as quickly as possible remains their top priority.
