Kathmandu: Jagdish Kharel, the newly appointed Minister of Communications and Information Technology in the Sushila Karki-led interim government, has assumed office. On Monday, he reached the ministry and signed his first decision.
According to Minister Kharel, it has been decided to provide free internet service in all public places across the Kathmandu Valley within two months. Noting that the social media shutdown movement stemmed from the Gen-Z movement, he said the decision was taken with the Gen-Z generation in mind.
He added that discussions are underway to expand free public internet nationwide. “Free internet will be available in public places in Kathmandu by Mangsir. Within five months, it will also be available in the provincial capitals and other major cities, with the approval of the Telecommunications Authority,” he said.
Minister Kharel stressed that systems matter more than individuals in a developing country. “A minister cannot bring change in six months. If there is no political interference, if leaders stop seeking favors, then every employee in our civil service has the skills and qualifications to deliver. Political interference has caused the problem,” he said.
He assured ministry staff of his non-interference approach: “There will be no interference from the minister. I will learn from you and trust the bureaucracy of my country. Keep the country and the people at the center, and move forward. Let us prove that Nepal’s bureaucracy is capable in South Asia.”
He also urged employees to prioritize transparency, good governance, efficient service delivery, and corruption control: “When we bid farewell after six months, let us be proud of our achievements. Let the people not suffer.”
Kharel, who also serves as news editor at Image Television, took the oath of office and secrecy before President Ram Chandra Poudel on Monday. Along with Kharel, Anil Kumar Sinha has been appointed Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies; Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs; and Land Management, Cooperatives and Poverty Alleviation. Mahabir Pun has been appointed Minister for Education, Science and Technology, while Madan Pariyar has been appointed Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development.
