Kathmandu: A clip of Chatur Bahadur Chand, president of the Nepali Congress District Working Committee Baitadi and president of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), saying that “ we need to convenience that the money found in Deuba’s house is a lie” went viral on social media. The clip has drawn sharp criticism.
Facebook user Bil Bdr Thami posted the video at 3:06 pm on Tuesday. By the time this news was written, it had been viewed over 935,000 times and shared more than 7,800 times.
The 28-second video carried the caption:
“We should go to the villages and tell the people that the money found in Deuba’s house is not real: Congress workers. Nepali Congress leaders and workers are still in 2007, they think people will believe whatever they say. But those who have lost their mental balance don’t know what generation Gen-Z is in! It is not possible to cure the two-legged sheep who still follow them in this world.”
Similarly, another user named Timure posted the same video at 11:30 am on Tuesday, writing: “We should convince the people that money was not found in every room of Deuba’s house: Congress leader Chatur Bahadur Chand (CAN President).”
In the viral clip, the banner behind Chand read “Constitution Day 2082” with the organizer listed as the Nepali Congress District Working Committee Baitadi. This suggested the clip came from a Constitution Day program held on 19 September. A search confirmed this.
The Facebook page Nepali Congress District Working Committee Baitadi had posted a longer 8-minute 17-second video at 3 pm on 19 September . The caption read: “President of Nepali Congress Baitadi speaking at the Constitution Day greeting exchange program.”
That same page later carried an article from Kushal Khabar at 8:12 pm titled “Congress Party Should Be Rebuilt, I Am Ready To Resign.” The article confirmed Chand’s remarks, verifying the viral clip.
In the clip, Chand said:
“...we need to confirm that it was not money. Neither the Nepali Congress nor the Nepali people believe in a paper statement alone. We had to go to the villages and convince the people that money was not found in their houses. This is a lie. It should not just be limited to a statement on social media, but it had to be clearly shared.”
However, the clip did not make it clear whether Chand specifically referred to claims about Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba’s house.
Another Facebook user, Mahesh Raj Bhatt, also shared a full 8-minute 17-second video at 12:22 pm on 19 September, matching the earlier post. Later the same day, Bhatt posted another 10-minute 1-second clip of Chand’s speech, saying it preceded the viral snippet.
In that longer speech, Chand discussed Deuba in the context of cabinet decisions during the Gen-Z protests. He said Deuba had opposed closing social media on the night protesters were tortured and killed, and had threatened to leave the government unless it was reopened.
This makes it clear that Chand’s comments in the viral clip were about convincing people that “the money was not found,” but they did not directly prove whether or not the claim about Deuba’s residence was true. Here is the video.
Even so, most social media videos claiming that money was found at Deuba’s house on 9 September have been verified as authentic. The TechPana Fact-Checking Team previously confirmed these claims after reviewing multiple sources. [Click here to read our fact-check on the authenticity of the money found at Deuba’s house.]
