After Spike in Violent Posts on Discord, ‘Hami Nepal’ Warns of Immediate Ban

Kathmandu: The non-governmental organization ‘Hami Nepal’, which gained attention during the Gen-Z protests, has expressed concern over rising discussions about bombs, explosives, and violent activities on its Discord server.

In a statement issued on social media on Wednesday, the group led by Sudhan Gurung warned that anyone posting such content will be immediately banned. The organization said the server, originally created to coordinate peaceful protests, is being misused for violent expression.

“We are seeing increasing reports of people trying to discuss bombs, explosives, or violent activities on this Discord server,” the statement said.

“Let this be perfectly clear: this server exists only to create a common community for peaceful protests and for Nepali citizens to discuss our country.”

The organization stated that any content related to violence or explosives goes completely against its principles. “Anyone posting such content will be immediately banned, and your account details will be sent to the relevant authorities,” the statement added.

‘Hami Nepal’ also urged members not to engage with such posts but to report them directly to the moderation team.

What Is Discord and Why Is It Popular Among Youth?

Discord, launched in 2015, was created by two American developers, Jason Citron and Stanislav Vishnevsky, to help gamers communicate easily during online play. At that time, players relied on apps like Skype or TeamSpeak, which were slow and resource-heavy.

To solve this problem, they built Discord, a fast, lightweight, and user-friendly platform that allows voice, video, and text communication. Over time, it expanded beyond gaming and became popular among young people for community building and activism, including movements like Gen-Z protests in Nepal.
