Police to Buy 85 New Vehicles, Including Electric Pickups, After Gen-Z Protests

Kathmandu: Following the destruction of hundreds of vehicles during the protests on 8 and 9 September, Nepal Police has begun the process of purchasing new vehicles. The procurement includes both electric and petrol-powered pickup trucks.

On Thursday, the police announced a tender for 85 vehicles, 75 petrol-powered pickups and 10 electric escort pickups. Interested vendors must submit their proposals by 31 October.

During the Gen-Z protests, which erupted after 19 students were killed in police firing on the first day, angry demonstrators had targeted police posts and vehicles, causing widespread damage.

The interim government, formed after the protests, has already announced House of Representatives elections for 5 March, 2026. The police moved to procure new vehicles to strengthen security ahead of the elections, as their fleet was severely reduced.

The Election Commission has also urged the police to allocate funds quickly for essential security equipment. Citing “special circumstances,” the police have initiated the procurement process to ensure adequate resources for election security management.
