Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagdish Kharel has clarified that the government will not shut down social media in Nepal.
Speaking at a discussion with various digital media organizations at Singha Durbar on Wednesday, Minister Kharel said social media has become the new mainstream media and must be properly managed, not banned.
“Social media should never be closed, and it will not be closed,” he said. “We need to manage it responsibly and make it effective.”
The minister emphasized that his priority is to regulate and manage social media platforms rather than restrict them.
Earlier, the KP Sharma Oli-led government had decided to ban unregistered social media platforms in Nepal, sparking widespread opposition. Following the decision, the Gen-Z generation took to the streets, protesting against both the social media ban and corruption. The current interim government led by Sushila Karki was formed in the aftermath of that movement.
