Kathmandu: The Election Commission has recorded a disappointing response in its ongoing voter list collection campaign ahead of the House of Representatives election on March 5. The commission had expected around 1.5 million new voters to register within about one and a half months, but so far, only around 100,000 have been added.
The interim government, formed after the Gen-Z rebellion of September 8 and 9, had set the election date for the last week of Falgun. Following that announcement, the commission resumed online voter pre-registration on September 25.
The election date was finalized after Prime Minister Sushila Karki, heading the interim government, recommended the dissolution of Parliament as demanded by protesters.
According to commission officials, 1.5 million new voters were expected to be added by Kartik 30 in the first phase of the campaign. However, with only about 13 days left, it appears that a large portion of eligible voters has yet to register.
Suman Ghimire, the Election Commission’s information officer, admitted that the target had not been met. “Since the application for voter list collection opened, only a little over 100,000 new voters have registered,” Ghimire told TechPana. “We had expected around 1.5 million during this period.”
He said most of the expected new voters belong to the younger demographic, but the commission has not yet released official statistics. Ghimire also clarified that there is no exact data available on how many Nepali citizens are currently eligible to obtain voter ID cards.
