14 Nepalis Rescued From Online Scam Centers in Myanmar, 11 More to Return Soon

Kathmandu: Fourteen Nepali citizens who were lured into working illegally at online scam centers in Myanmar have been rescued and brought home. The Nepali Embassy in Thailand coordinated the rescue with the concerned authorities in Myanmar and Thailand.

According to a statement issued by the embassy on Wednesday, the rescued Nepalis were taken from Myawaddy, Myanmar, to Bangkok via the Immigration Office in Tak Province, Thailand, through Mae Sot. They returned to Nepal on Wednesday via Nepal Airlines.

The embassy said preparations are underway to repatriate 11 more Nepalis still stranded in Myanmar as soon as possible.

Since October 19, more than 2,000 foreign nationals from 28 countries, including 38 Nepalis, have been rescued from various scam centers in Myawaddy and allowed to enter Thailand. The embassy stated it is working with Thai authorities to send the remaining 38 Nepalis back to Nepal.

The embassy has urged Nepali citizens to go for foreign employment only after obtaining a labor permit from the government and not to fall for promises of easy and quick money. It also warned against traveling to countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand for foreign employment under the pretext of tourism.
