Kathmandu: Scammers have started targeting the general public by claiming that the system of Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) was damaged during the recent Gen-Z protests. They are deceiving customers under the pretext of a “KYC update,” sending fake links and stealing confidential bank details.
These fraudsters send links through messages, asking users to click and update their KYC information. Once the link is opened, they capture sensitive login credentials and hack into accounts to steal money.
Facebook user Devendra Koirala shared his recent experience of such a scam attempt. He received a call from the number 9700554568, which appeared as Rastriya Banijiya Limited on Truecaller.
During the call, the fraudster said, “All the bank’s records were destroyed during the Gen-Z protests. I’ve sent a link to your SMS for KYC update. Please open it and complete the process. I’ll stay on hold in case of any issues.”
At first, Devendra believed the caller, as he had an account with a commercial bank and had seen reports of vandalism during the protests. When he said he didn’t have internet access, the caller pressured him to complete the process quickly, saying the update would not be possible after office hours.
Devendra opened the link, which asked for his user ID and password. He entered the details and soon received an OTP code. However, he noticed that the website looked different from the bank’s original site and contained unnecessary ads.
Sensing something was wrong, he ignored the OTP, immediately transferred his funds to another account, and contacted the bank. Only then did he realize it was a scam. Relieved, he later called the fraudster and warned, “Get ready to be handcuffed.”
Devendra’s case represents the growing trend of digital fraud targeting banking customers.
Rastriya Banijya Bank has urged customers not to open links from unknown numbers and not to share OTPs or personal details with anyone. The bank recently issued a notice stating, “Some fraudsters are misusing the name of Rastriya Banijya Bank to call customers, ask for personal information, or lure them with fake offers. Please do not trust such calls or messages and keep your account secure.”
On Truecaller, the number Devendra received appears as Rastiya Banijiya Limited with the bank’s logo but a spelling error. Even if the name appears correct or verified, it does not guarantee authenticity. The verified badge on Truecaller only confirms an email-based verification, not identity.
Police and banks have urged the public to be cautious and avoid clicking on any link or sharing personal details over calls or messages, even if they appear to be from trusted institutions.
