Now in Nepal, TikTok Users Under 18 Can Use the App Only for 60 Minutes a Day

Kathmandu: TikTok has introduced new tools to help families ensure that teens use the app safely and responsibly. After launching the ‘Family Pairing’ feature in Nepal, TikTok has added more options focused on family safety and privacy.

Through Family Pairing, parents can set time limits for their teens using the screen-time management tool. They can also schedule breaks and control features such as direct messaging, comments, account visibility, and video downloads.

Direct messaging is automatically disabled for users aged 16 or younger, and push notifications are muted at night. TikTok’s feed now displays age-appropriate content for younger users.

By default, users under 18 are limited to 60 minutes of screen time per day. The system filters out content deemed unsuitable for teens and uses technology to verify users’ age groups.

Parents can now view their child’s privacy settings and receive notifications if their child posts a public video. TikTok said these tools aim to enhance family communication about online behavior, healthy screen time, and content appropriateness.

The company clarified that these tools are not meant for strict parental control but to encourage open family conversations and help teens build disciplined, responsible digital habits.

Earlier this year, TikTok also launched a Guided Meditation feature to support user well-being. Integrated with the existing ‘Sleep Hours’ setting, it helps users relax at night through calm, guided sessions for better sleep and emotional balance.

For users under 18, this feature is automatically activated and appears in the ‘For You’ feed after 10 p.m. as a suggestion for meditation. Adults can manually enable it through Screen Time settings.

With these updates, TikTok aims to help both teens and adults build personalized routines that maximize enjoyment while reducing the negative effects of excessive screen time.

These new improvements strengthen TikTok’s existing safety infrastructure, which already includes over 50 protective measures such as content filters, screen-time limits, and restricted messaging. Through its Digital Safety Partnership for Families, TikTok continues to provide guidance and resources to promote healthy digital habits at home.

With trusted features like Family Pairing and age-appropriate safety controls, TikTok says it is helping families explore, create, and connect safely with the new generation.
