National Identity Card Integrated Into Election System, Voter Roll Registration Now Online

Kathmandu: Starting today, citizens with a National Identity Card number can register their names in the voter roll online without visiting the election office. Election Commission Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said the technical test of the voter roll registration process using the National Identity Card number has been successfully completed.

“It has been some time since we completed the technical test of the voter roll registration process by entering the National Identity Card number during the pre-enrollment phase. It was successful, and we are implementing it from today,” Bhattarai told TechPana.

With this, the National Identity Card has been officially integrated into the voter roll. The work began on Monday, and the technical test was successfully completed on Thursday afternoon.

The Election Commission has already made arrangements to receive pre-enrollment applications online. Earlier, citizens had to visit the election office to fill in personal details such as name, address, date of birth, family information, and citizenship details, and to provide biometrics. Now, those with National Identity Card numbers will no longer need to visit the office to provide biometrics or photographs.

According to Bhattarai, entering the National Identity Card number during pre-enrollment will remove the need for citizens to appear in person for biometrics.

Following the instructions of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers had issued a letter to the Election Commission with three key directives aimed at easing the voter list collection process.

Accordingly, the Commission extended service hours to two shifts, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., to manage the pressure of voter list registration in its online system. Additional manpower was deployed, and immediate support was arranged to resolve technical problems.

Under the Prime Minister’s facilitation, the National Identity Card and Registration Department agreed to provide the collected biometric data to the Election Commission. As a result, citizens who already have a National Identity Card number and are unable to visit the election office in person can now register online.

According to the Election Commission, 18.377 million voters have been registered so far. Acting Chief Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari informed Prime Minister Karki that 209,552 new voters have been added since the announcement of the latest election.

Spokesperson Bhattarai said that while some technical issues remain due to the surge in voter registration applications, efforts are being made to address them. The deadline for voter roll registration for the upcoming House of Representatives election, scheduled for 5 March, is 16 November. Despite the heavy pressure on the system, the Commission has not yet planned to extend the registration deadline.
