Kathmandu: The second season of Nepal’s biggest franchise cricket tournament, the Nepal Premier League (NPL), begins today. Fans are excited for the month-long event, while teams are also competing off the field through their digital presence.
An analysis of each team’s activity and popularity on social media and the internet shows a wide gap in their digital reach. Out of the eight teams, the websites of Kathmandu Gorkhaz and Lumbini Lions are inactive, making it difficult for fans to access official updates. The remaining six teams have active websites that share team updates and sell jerseys and merchandise.
Biratnagar Kings’ website is basic. It includes general information and a “Become a Fan” option, but the player profile and match schedule sections are empty.
In contrast, the websites of Karnali Yaks and Chitwan Rhinos are the most attractive and informative. Karnali Yaks' homepage features theme videos, detailed player bios, last season’s results, standings, team news, and videos. However, its merchandise section redirects users to Daraz.
Chitwan Rhinos’ website stands out for its detailed player photos and jersey numbers, results from previous seasons, news, a photo gallery for each game, and an option to order various jerseys directly from the site.
Similarly, the websites of Pokhara Avengers and last season’s champions, Janakpur Bolts, are also well-structured. Pokhara’s website includes player and team member names, news, blogs, and game schedules, though fans must visit Nepathya’s website to buy jerseys.
The Janakpur Bolts website includes the names, photos, birthdates, and roles of players, along with jersey purchasing options. Sudurpaschim Royals' website, while active, is less visually appealing. It includes general player information and a paid subscription option.
The variations seen on websites extend to social media. There is a significant gap among teams in follower numbers. Sudurpaschim Royals leads with 227,000 followers on Facebook, 20,700 on Instagram, and 35,800 on TikTok. Pokhara Avengers ranks second with 158,000 Facebook followers, 19,500 on Instagram, and 11,400 on TikTok. This team is also active on X and YouTube.
Lumbini Lions is in third place with 138,000 followers on Facebook and 15,000 on Instagram, but has only 265 followers on TikTok.
Karnali Yaks has 100,000 followers on Facebook, 22,800 on Instagram, and 35,300 on TikTok. Biratnagar Kings have 98,000 followers on Facebook, 23,400 on Instagram, and 15,500 on TikTok.
Chitwan Rhinos have 52,000 followers on Facebook, 14,000 on Instagram, and 14,500 on TikTok. Kathmandu Gorkhas have 44,000 followers on Facebook, 7,234 on Instagram, and 9,297 on TikTok.
Last season’s winners, Janakpur Bolts, sit at the bottom of the social media rankings. They have only 38,000 followers on Facebook and 6,586 on Instagram, and their TikTok account appears inactive.
