Kathmandu: The Nepal Premier League (NPL) has faced digital piracy since the opening match of its second season. Illegal live broadcasts of the tournament have spread across social media platforms, including Facebook and YouTube.
A simple search for “Kathmandu Gorkhas vs. Janakpur Bolts” on social media shows hundreds of pages and channels streaming the match illegally. Most have removed the official broadcast watermark and added their own logo or watermark.
Thousands of viewers are watching these unauthorized streams. Piracy has also been detected on platforms such as “Yasim TV.”
Star Sports and Kantipur Max hold the television broadcasting rights for the NPL, while Fancode has OTT rights in India and DishHome Go has rights for other countries.
DishHome Go, one of the official platforms, made the first match free for all users. However, viewers complained about several technical issues, including app crashes, black screens, and repeated payment prompts even after completing the payment.
This surge in piracy at the start of the tournament has created a major challenge for both the organizers and the official broadcasters.
