Kathmandu: Nepali startup VayuDrishti has been selected to compete in the World Summit Awards (WSA). The startup has been shortlisted in the Environment and Green Energy category for the summit scheduled for February.
With this selection, VayuDrishti will represent Nepal alongside more than 180 countries at the summit, said Vayudrishti CEO Sakriya Pandey. He said he is confident that the startup has the potential to win the title.
Every year, WSA honors 40 excellent projects in eight categories based on recommendations from experts across 182 countries and a rigorous selection process. It also selects five WSA Young Innovators. Countries participating in the competition can nominate one project for each category.
In 2022, Nepal’s Nagarik app won the Government and Citizen Engagement category at WSA. In 2023, the Nepali app Karobar won the Young Innovators Award. In 2024, the mobile app Kata Ho won the Smart Settlements and Urbanization Award.
What Is VayuDrishti?
VayuDrishti is a startup that builds a low-cost and portable device to measure air pollution. It provides real-time air quality information and uses AI to predict pollution levels for the next seven days.
A team of young developers, 19-year-old Akira Pandey, 23-year-old Shreesha Pandey, 21-year-old Manjila Pandey, and 25-year-old Bikram Thapa, built the VayuDrishti device. The device is claimed to provide reliable results for just $250 (about Rs 35,000), compared to the expensive devices currently available in the market that cost around $30,000 (about Rs 4.1 million).
VayuDrishti made it to the top 20 in the global competition of the Hult Prize student startup challenge last September.
