Kathmandu: Sanima Bank will permanently shut down its internet banking service from 30 November. The bank decided to discontinue the service after the number of active users dropped sharply with the rise of mobile banking and other digital payment options.
Digital tools like Connect IPS and mobile banking under Nepal Clearing House (NCHL) have become more popular in recent years. The bank said it no longer sees the need to operate internet banking at an additional cost when customers are already completing transactions through these platforms.
According to Pawan Kumar Acharya, Deputy Chief Executive Officer and Chief Information Officer of the bank, active users have fallen to a very low number. “We found very few active users during our study. Most people were using the service only for payments within Sanima Bank, not for inter-bank transactions,” Acharya said. “When mobile banking, Connect IPS and Corporate Pay are already available, continuing this service did not seem reasonable.”
The bank has not disclosed the exact number of users. However, it has made it clear that the service will be shut down because the active customer base is minimal.
