TikTok Videos on Highway Raise Accident Risk in Tanahun

Kathmandu: The number of young people making TikTok videos on the road has been increasing in the Kharenitar–Bhimad Chowk area of Shuklagandaki Municipality in Tanahun, along the Prithvi Highway. Stakeholders have expressed concern that filming videos on this busy road section, where expansion and repair work is ongoing, is disrupting traffic and increasing the risk of accidents.

Locals say that after the road was widened, the open view of the surrounding hills has attracted students and young people. Many have been seen standing or sitting directly on the road to make videos. With the daily rise in visitors, residents warn that fast-moving vehicles could lead to serious injuries or loss of life.

Ward No. 6 Chairman of Shuklagandaki Municipality, Buddhi Bahadur Thapa, said initiatives will be taken to stop such activities. He said disorder is spreading on the highway in the name of making TikTok videos.

“Risking one’s life and violating public decency in the name of fun is not acceptable,” Thapa said. “Young people are gathering only to make TikToks. Some have even been found changing clothes on the road to shoot new videos. This is not entertainment. It is a social problem. We will start stopping such activities in sensitive places like highways from tomorrow.”

He said coordination will be done with the mayor and informed that city police will be deployed. “Anyone obstructing the road, engaging in illegal acts in public places, or creating risk will be taken under control with police support,” he added.

Ward No. 7 Chairman Khadga Singh Thapa also urged young people to understand the sensitivity of the highway. “This is a highway, not a park or playground. Vehicles from Bhotepani and high-speed traffic pass through here. The road is also winding. Dancing and filming videos on such a road is extremely dangerous,” he said.

He said notice boards will be installed and surveillance increased to improve safety. Bhimad Chowk lies on the border of Wards No. 5 and 7. Officials say the growing crowd of people making videos is distracting drivers and creating problems for pedestrians.

The Area Police Office Belchautara said no formal complaint has been filed so far, but police have taken note based on social media videos and public concerns. In a statement, the police said Bhimad Chowk is a highly accident-prone area and that road upgrading has already affected traffic flow.

“The recent trend of gathering on the road to make TikToks, reels, and videos has further increased the risk of accidents. We sincerely request everyone to remain cautious,” the statement said.

Assistant Constable Amit Yadav said making videos on the highway is life-threatening and confirmed that security monitoring will be increased in coordination with the municipality.
