Photo Of Rabi Lamichhane And Jwala Sangraula Edited To Look Like A Couple Goes Viral

Kathmandu: A photo claiming to show Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and party leader Jwala Sangraula as a couple has recently gone viral on social media. In the viral image, Lamichhane and Sangraula appear to be posing like a married couple.

However, a fact check has confirmed that the photo is edited. Rabi Lamichhane’s face was digitally placed on a photo originally taken by Jwala Sangraula with her husband, Himal Upadhyay, and shared on her own social media account.

Claim

On Wednesday (January 7) at 10:12 am, a Facebook user named ‘Kulananda Gharti’ shared the image with the caption, “Isn’t this the real face of your brother Rabi Lamichhane and are you blind devotees?” The image shows Jwala Sangraula and Ravi Lamichhane together.

As of the time of writing, the post has received more than 9,100 reactions, over 3,700 comments, and has been shared 497 times. See post, archive link and screenshot.

Research

We examined the image using Google Reverse Image Search. The same image was found to be shared by multiple social media users. A Facebook page named ‘Achham political’ posted the photo on February 10, 2024, with the caption, “Do you know these people????” See post and screenshot.

The same image was also posted at 1:34 pm on Wednesday from the Facebook account ‘Rakshya Thapa’. The caption reads, “Isn’t this the real face of your brother Rabi Lamichhane and are they blind devotees?” See post and screenshot.

Another post was made at 6:51 pm on Wednesday from the Facebook account ‘Sita KC’. The caption reads, “This is the real character of the bell!” See post and screenshot.

Photo Analysis

A closer examination of the image shows clear signs of editing.

• The color tone of Lamichhane’s face does not match the rest of the photo.

• The face and neck do not blend naturally, making the image appear manipulated.

Based on this, we searched for the original photo. During the search, we found a photo posted by Jwala Sangraula from her official social media account three years ago. 

The photo was published on December 31, 2022, with a New Year 2023 greeting.

The man seen with Sangraula in the original photo is her husband, Himal Upadhyay. See post and screenshot.

The viral photo claiming to show RSP President Rabi Lamichhane and leader Jwala Sangraula as a couple is misleading. The image has been edited. The original photo shows Sangraula with her husband, Himal Upadhyay. Lamichhane’s face was later added to the image to spread false information.
