KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Election Commission (ECN) is partnering with TechPana to use AI for monitoring election misinformation and code of conduct violations ahead of the upcoming polls.
On Thursday, TechPana signed a memorandum of understanding to provide the commission with an AI-based Election Media Monitoring System that tracks fake news, hate speech, and misleading political content circulating on social media and digital platforms.
The system will support the commission’s FactCheck initiative by identifying and analyzing election-related content in real time and flagging possible breaches of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, officials said.
According to the agreement, the AI tools will operate on principles of neutrality and impartiality, with no bias toward any political party, candidate, or group. The commission said the technology would help strengthen transparency and public trust in the electoral process.
TechPana has committed to providing the monitoring system and related technical support to the Election Commission free of charge as part of the partnership.
The agreement was signed by Laxmi Datta Kalauni, Under Secretary at the Election Commission of Nepal, and Bijay Timalsina, Chief Executive Officer of TechPana Media Pvt. Ltd.
Election officials said the collaboration is expected to play a key role in countering digital disinformation and ensuring a more informed voting environment during the elections.
