Government Warns of Legal Action Against Fake News and Misleading Online Content

Kathmandu. The government has issued a warning that individuals or organizations publishing or broadcasting baseless, false, or misleading information will face legal action under cybercrime laws. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology said that spreading unverified information will be subject to prosecution under the Election Transactions Act and other relevant laws.

“Such baseless, false, and misleading information has been circulating through various online media and social networks, drawing serious attention from the ministry. It not only creates confusion among the public but also spreads negative psychology in society,” the statement read.

The ministry has directed all media outlets and individuals not to publish or share any news or information that has not been verified by official sources or is based on rumors.

It further stated that those found involved in disseminating such content will be identified and action will be taken in accordance with prevailing laws.

The statement also urged social media users to verify the authenticity of information or content before sharing it on their personal accounts.

Additionally, the ministry has made arrangements for the public to file complaints regarding misleading or false information through its official website “Social Media Complaint Registration” portal, as well as via phone number or email.
