Kathmandu Moves Toward Smart Traffic System as Police Launch ‘Faceless’ Traffic Monitoring Trial in Thapathali

Kathmandu. The Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police has begun testing a ‘faceless traffic management’ system that uses technology to monitor and regulate traffic without the direct presence of officers on the road.

The system was launched in Thapathali on Sunday on a trial basis, where traffic compliance is currently being observed from a control room using CCTV cameras installed at Thapathali Chowk.

Traffic Police Spokesperson Superintendent (SP) Naresh Raj Subedi said the initiative aims to reduce the need for on-road personnel while promoting a more technology-driven approach to traffic management. Authorities are preparing to take action against rule violators based on footage and data collected through the system.

Spokesperson Subedi said the ongoing trial will help identify gaps and improve the system before wider implementation. “At present, we do not have fully advanced technology. We have started testing with available resources and equipment,” he said, adding that fewer traffic personnel have been deployed in the test area as monitoring shifts to the control room.

If the trial in Thapathali proves successful, the system will be gradually expanded to other parts of the Kathmandu Valley. Plans include the installation of smart traffic lights, AI-powered cameras, and an integrated intelligent traffic system aimed at minimizing reliance on traffic police.

Spokesperson Subedi also emphasized the need for greater public discipline under a technology-based system. “Given narrow roads and high traffic volume, lane discipline is crucial,” he said. “If everyone drives in a civilized manner and follows rules responsibly, traffic can be managed smoothly even without a heavy on-road police presence.”
