Kathmandu. Several Nepali media outlets have issued corrections after initially publishing misleading reports regarding a recent Supreme Court order, following a fact-check conducted by TechPana that identified inaccuracies in the coverage.
Some media organizations had reported that the Supreme Court had issued an interim order halting the government’s decision to impose customs duty on goods valued above Rs 100. However, the TechPana FactCheck Desk later clarified that the claim was misleading, prompting corrections and apologies from multiple outlets.
Kantipur Television issued a clarification on its earlier broadcast and social media posts, stating, “We apologise for the factual error in the news report aired on Saturday that ‘Supreme Court issues interim order to stop the government’s decision to impose customs duty on daily consumables above Rs 100.’”
Similarly, Onlinekhabar corrected its earlier report and removed the story titled “Supreme Court stays the decision to impose customs duty on goods above Rs 100,” acknowledging inaccuracies in the interpretation of the court order and apologizing to readers. Ratopati.com also issued a correction, citing factual errors in its reporting.
However, Baahrakhari.com has not yet removed the misleading report. The spread of the inaccurate interpretation also led to some Indian media outlets publishing similar misleading claims about the court order.
In reality, a division bench of Supreme Court justices Hari Prasad Phuyal and Tek Prasad Dhungana issued an interim order on Friday directing the government, the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Department of Customs to ensure respectful treatment of citizens from border areas during customs inspections.
The order did not include any directive to halt the collection of customs duties, as was incorrectly reported by some media outlets.
