15 Bangladeshi Nationals Arrested in Kathmandu Over Alleged Facebook Blackmail Operation

Kathmandu. Police have arrested 15 Bangladeshi nationals in Kathmandu on charges of operating a Facebook-based blackmail and extortion scheme using fake accounts created in the names of foreign models and young women.

A team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office apprehended the suspects during a raid at Hotel ACE in Paknajol, near Thamel, on Friday. According to police, the individuals had entered Nepal on visit visas but were allegedly involved in activities inconsistent with the purpose of their stay.

Investigators said the group had rented rooms on the fourth, fifth, and sixth floors of the hotel and was operating an organized network from the premises. Police claim the suspects created fake Facebook profiles impersonating foreign models and young women, befriended individuals from Bangladesh and India, and later extorted money through blackmail during online conversations.

Among those arrested are 25-year-old MD Majidul Islam Redoy, 22-year-old Shafiul Islam, and 22-year-old Apon Chanda Saha, along with 12 other Bangladeshi citizens.

All 15 suspects have been handed over to the Department of Immigration in Kalikasthan for further investigation and legal action. Police said proceedings are being carried out in accordance with the Immigration Act and other relevant legal provisions.
