Kathmandu. Police have arrested a man in Chitwan on charges of engaging in illegal cryptocurrency trading and seized 20 mobile devices during a search operation.
The arrested individual has been identified as 29-year-old Pappu Kumar Yadav, a permanent resident of Dhanusha currently residing in Chitwan.
Acting on confidential information that cryptocurrency transactions were being conducted through mobile applications such as Binance and Bybit, a team from the District Police Office, Chitwan, detained Yadav on Friday.
According to DSP Chandra Bhusan Yadav, information officer at the District Police Office, a search of the suspect’s residence led to the recovery of 17 smartphones and three bar phones.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate that the devices were being used to accumulate and trade cryptocurrencies through mobile applications. Authorities have yet to unlock some of the seized phones and are using technical means to access the devices as part of the ongoing investigation.
Investigators believe all of the recovered phones belong to Yadav. Police said further details regarding the source of the cryptocurrency holdings, the use of the devices, and other aspects of the case will be disclosed after a detailed investigation.
The District Court, Chitwan, has granted an extension for Yadav’s detention, and further investigation into the case is underway.
