Kathmandu. A total of 649 electric vehicles under the control of the Armed Police Force have been released after an investigation committee concluded that there were no irregularities in their import and customs clearance process.
The vehicles, which had entered Nepal through the Korla checkpoint until May 28, 2026, were previously held by the Armed Police Force at various locations, including Jomsom in Mustang, Korla, Hemja in Kaski, and Kushma in Parbat.
Ahead of the public announcement of the national budget, allegations surfaced that a leak of changes to tax rates led to a sudden surge in vehicle imports and potential customs evasion worth billions of rupees. The allegations also targeted Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle and BYD EV’s importer in Nepal, Cimex Inc.
Following the claims, a probe committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Customs Department, Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force was formed to investigate the matter. The committee concluded that the vehicles were imported legally and had passed customs inspection, dismissing allegations that they were cleared before reaching customs yards or that any importer received undue advantage.
Although the committee found no irregularities, the vehicles remained under Armed Police control for some time as formal instructions from the Prime Minister’s Office were pending.
