Kathmandu. A 22-year-old man has been arrested in Kathmandu for impersonating an eSewa employee and defrauding a victim of Rs 198,499 through unauthorized access to a digital wallet account, according to the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police.

The accused, identified as Shubham Sah of Ward No. 2 of Madhav Narayan Municipality in Rautahat, was arrested on Tuesday, and the Kathmandu District Court has extended his remand by four days for further investigation into electronic fraud.

According to police, Sah repeatedly called the mobile number of ‘Yak and Company Enterprises’ from 9763578192, falsely introducing himself as an eSewa representative. He allegedly lured the victim by claiming that unused reward points were available in the account and persuaded them to share an OTP under the pretext of verification, which he then used to gain unauthorized access.

Police said the accused subsequently transferred Rs 198,499 from the victim’s account to the eSewa ID of ‘Evolution Trading Pvt. Ltd.’ and also used part of the amount to purchase an iPhone 17.

During the arrest, police recovered four mobile phones and four SIM cards allegedly used in the scam. Investigators also seized a list containing details of 153 individuals, including their eSewa IDs and mobile numbers, which police believe was prepared for further fraud attempts, according to Cyber Bureau spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Dilip Kumar Giri.

Police further stated that Sah had previously been arrested twice in similar cases and was released on bail on both occasions.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant against such scams and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police office or the Cyber Bureau via [email protected].
