Four Arrested in Baglung After 17-Year-Old Killed in Dispute Over iPhone

 

Kathmandu. Police have arrested four people, including two minors, for the murder of a 17-year-old boy in Baglung, with investigators saying the crime was triggered by a dispute over an iPhone.

The arrested individuals include Sudip BK, 19, and Rem Bahadur BK, 20, both from Ward No. 1 of Badigad Rural Municipality, along with two other minors whose identities have not been disclosed.

According to the District Police Office, Baglung, Lajin Thapa, 17, went missing on the night of July 18. Following a week-long search, his body was recovered from Mankhola in Ward No. 1 of Badigad Rural Municipality at around 9:15 a.m. on July 25.

Police said preliminary findings indicate the incident was a homicide, prompting the arrest of four suspects for further investigation.

Lajin had been studying in Kathmandu with financial support from his father and had returned to his village about a month before the incident.

District Police Office spokesperson and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Rameshwor Twati said the investigation suggests the dispute centered on the victim's iPhone. 

"Our preliminary investigation indicates the incident was related to the iPhone," DSP Twati said. "The victim had been living in Kathmandu and had returned to the village only recently. While others used ordinary mobile phones, he owned an iPhone. A dispute broke out after the suspects allegedly attempted to take the device."

According to police, the suspects were unable to afford such a phone and were drawn to it out of curiosity and greed. Investigators believe an argument over the device escalated into the fatal attack.

The four suspects have been remanded to custody for five days following permission from the Baglung District Court. Police said a detailed investigation into the case is ongoing.
