Kathmandu: Fraudulent activities are being carried out on social media in the name of Starlink, a satellite internet service that has not been licensed to operate in Nepal. Scammers are attempting to lure users with Facebook ads promising “lifetime internet” for Rs 20,000.
A Facebook page named ‘Starlink Global’ is running deceptive advertisements claiming that Starlink’s new product, the Starlink Mini, is now available in Nepal as a “last chance offer.” The ad highlights features such as no monthly fee, easy portability, high-speed internet, and suitability for remote areas. The Nepali text appears to be poorly translated from Starlink’s English ads, further exposing the fraud.
Clicking the ad leads to a fake website designed to look like Starlink’s official site, with the domain hubgridaccessnp.site, a free domain. The site claims that after paying a one-time setup fee, users can enjoy lifetime unlimited internet.
Two fraudulent offers are displayed as Starlink Mini Lifetime package for Rs 20,600, with promises of unlimited internet, a one-year warranty, and free worldwide shipping and annual package worth Rs 10,900 for one year with 50 GB data.
When users attempt to order, they are redirected to another site called ‘Eco Offer’, where payment is requested via Google Pay, Shop Pay, or credit cards.
In reality, the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has not authorized Starlink to operate in Nepal. Even if hardware is purchased, the service cannot be used without official approval. It is clear these fake websites and offers are designed to deceive Nepali users.
