Kathmandu: It has been confirmed that the Prime Minister's official social media accounts are fully secure with the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. However, these accounts have remained inactive since the formation of the new government.
According to the Prime Minister’s Office in Singha Durbar, all official social media accounts, including X, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, are under the ownership of the Private Secretariat led by the Joint Secretary. Of the two types of private secretariats assigned to the Prime Minister, the one staffed by government employees (under the Joint Secretary) is responsible for managing these accounts.
Subash Dhakal, Joint Secretary and head of the Information Technology Division at the Prime Minister’s Office, told TechPana that the official accounts always remain under the control of the Private Secretariat led by the Joint Secretary. “The situation is critical right now. It may seem like the Prime Minister’s official accounts have been lost during the transitional period, but they are safe with the secretariat staffed by government employees within the PM’s Office,” Dhakal said. “If the secretariat changes tomorrow, the accounts will be handed over.”
The accounts could not be reactivated, it is understood, because of the transitional phase after the arson attack on the Prime Minister’s Office at Singha Durbar on September 9 during the Gen-Z movement and the hurried formation of an interim government. Still, officials insist there is no question about the ownership or security of the accounts. Dhakal added that when a new Prime Minister is appointed, the accounts is handed over to the new leadership along with the staff changes in the government employees’ secretariat.
