Kathmandu: The government is going to amend the law to provide Nepali citizens living abroad with the opportunity to vote in the upcoming House of Representatives elections to be held on 6 March. Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Om Prakash Aryal has informed that the process of amending the law will be taken forward through an ordinance, stating that the Supreme Court order will be implemented this time.
In a discussion with officials of the Election Commission on Thursday, Minister Aryal said that the government will make every effort to ensure the voting rights of Nepalis living abroad. He stressed that even under the proportional electoral system, they should be given the right to vote.
The Supreme Court had ordered in 2074 BS to provide the opportunity to Nepalis living abroad to vote. Minister Aryal mentioned that voting arrangements can be made using technology through embassies even in countries where there is no full possibility of voting.
He said that the government is committed to bringing the younger generation into the mainstream of politics and not depriving them of the opportunity to vote in elections.
After the discussion, he told reporters, "The court has also ordered this. If there are some technical difficulties in the law, then there is a matter of studying it and starting from somewhere this year. There has been a kind of agreement to study the law for this."
