Kathmandu: Nepal Telecom has launched 2G and 4G services in remote areas of Manang district. The company has completed mobile service expansion and quality enhancement in several locations by installing a new BTS.
For years, Telecom had been providing 2G services through V-SAT technology in Pisang (Ward No. 1), Bal (Ward No. 3), Tanki Manang (Ward No. 8), and Khangsar (Ward No. 9) of Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality. As these are important tourism areas, locals and entrepreneurs had long demanded better services, since V-SAT technology could not meet the growing demand. Addressing this pressure, Telecom began operating 4G services in these areas from 4 Asoj.
According to Telecom, geographical remoteness had made even radio link services impossible. However, with the operation of the Besisahar–Khangsar ADSS link, 4G services have now become possible. The company is also preparing to launch 4G in Tilicho Base Camp and Thorongphedi soon.
To address complaints of poor mobile coverage, Telecom installed a new BTS in Kotogaun of Chame Rural Municipality–3. Since 17 September, both 2G and 4G services have been operational there.
Similarly, Talgaun (Ward No. 1 of Nasong Rural Municipality), which previously had only 2G and 3G services, has been upgraded with 4G since 21 September. Telecom stated that the new 4G BTS there will also provide coverage to the Chyamche area in northern Lamjung district.
With these upgrades, Telecom's 4G service has now reached all municipalities of Manang district except Narpabhoomi Rural Municipality. In Nar and Phu villages of Narpabhoomi, and Bhimthang Kothi village of Nasong Rural Municipality, Telecom is still providing services through the V-SAT system.
