Kathmandu: Communications and Information Technology Minister Jagadish Kharel’s plan to introduce free Wi-Fi in public places in major cities within five months is attractive but faces many challenges, internet entrepreneur Binay Bohra has said.
Bohra, former president of the Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN), urged the minister to approach the issue more practically.
“While well-intentioned schemes like free Wi-Fi may sound attractive and simple, there are many challenges and complications. Only by listening to different perspectives can the minister fully understand these complexities and make mature decisions to bring policy changes that truly advance Nepal’s digital transformation by reviving the telecommunications sector,” Bohra wrote.
He emphasized that the minister should collaborate with the bureaucracy and stakeholders. “His first step should be to meet with stakeholders, listen carefully, study past policies and documents, and ask tough questions,” he said.
“There is no doubt he has extensive knowledge in his field as a seasoned television personality with a media background. But since this ministry is also a hub for telecommunications and IT, the new minister must be well-informed about its past, present, and future,” Bohra added.
