Viral TikTok Video Falsely Claims Petrol Car Fire in Udayapur Was an EV Accident

Kathmandu: A misleading video has gone viral on TikTok, falsely claiming that an electric vehicle (EV) caught fire near Gaighat in Udayapur. The video, however, shows a petrol-powered car burning.

On Monday, a TikTok user named ‘yubarajtamang120’ posted a 16-second video showing a car engulfed in flames on a forest road. The video was captioned, “Gaighat aaghadi ko jungle ma EV car ma aago lagyo” (An EV car caught fire in the forest ahead of Gaighat). See video and screenshot.

After the video went viral, TechPana verified the claim with DSP Kedarman Dong, the information officer at the District Police Office, Udayapur. He confirmed that the incident involved a petrol vehicle, not an EV.

“A petrol car caught fire in Andheri, Ward No. 7 of Udayapurgadhi Rural Municipality. The vehicle was a Ford with registration number Ba 9 Cha 8668,” DSP Dong said. “The reason behind the fire is still under investigation.”

The car, traveling from Ilam to Kathmandu, was driven by 42-year-old Prem Kumar Century of Chulachuli Rural Municipality Ward No. 5. His wife Anita Century (27) and their sons Ayush (14) and Aaron (7) were also in the vehicle. Aaron sustained minor injuries and was treated at District Hospital Udayapur, while the rest of the family remained safe.

Police confirmed that the viral claim about an EV fire in Gaighat is false.
