Kathmandu: The Nepal Film and Cultural Academy has strongly objected to the deliberate character assassination of artists who participated in the ‘Gen-Z’ movement. In a statement issued on Saturday, the academy demanded an immediate end to such acts being carried out through social media and political platforms, and called for legal action against those responsible.
The academy said that threatening social boycotts, spreading false accusations, and using abusive language to defame artists on social media are direct attacks on democratic values and cultural freedom. Highlighting the historical role of artists in driving social change, the statement emphasized that raising one’s voice on national and social issues is a “responsibility of a conscious citizen.”
“Speaking out on social issues is not a crime; it is the duty of an aware citizen,” the statement read. “Artists are the conscience and collective voice of the nation.”
The academy also criticized attempts to blame artists before the official investigation concludes, saying that such actions disrespect the judicial process. “Convicting anyone without a judicial verdict is a serious violation of democratic justice,” it stated.
The academy urged the authorities to immediately stop the attacks on artists and curb such propaganda through strict enforcement of cyber laws. It also called on all film-related organizations to show professional solidarity and pursue legal remedies.
