Kathmandu: Kathmandu Metropolitan City has signed an agreement with Nepal Telecom to connect CCTV cameras across the city to its network. The agreement was signed on Friday at Kathmandu Plaza by Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain and Bagmati Director of the Telecom Directorate, Indal Yadav.
Under the agreement, Nepal Telecom will provide local intranet through its optical fiber network, including FTTH (Fiber to the Home), for CCTV networks of the Metropolitan City and ward offices.
Telecom will also offer regular maintenance, restoration of accidental damage, technical support, service expansion capacity, emergency continuity planning, network monitoring, and services for identifying and resolving disruptions.
The Metropolitan City will supply equipment, including CCTV cameras and routers, while Telecom will provide the required high-speed bandwidth and update the network to keep pace with technological advancements. If the Metropolitan City decides to expand the service, Telecom will extend the optical fiber network accordingly.
Speaking at the signing, CAO Guragain said, “We are confident that technology will help make the city safer and smarter through intergovernmental coordination and cooperation without complaints. We expect a dedicated mechanism will manage the city’s services.”
Telecom Director Yadav added that a system would be created to meet the needs and expectations of the Metropolitan City.
Since Telecom already has an optical fiber network, the Metropolitan City can immediately access footage from previously installed CCTV cameras, said Anirudra Nepal, Head of the IT Department. Telecom will be responsible for delivering footage from CCTV cameras to the Metropolitan City’s surveillance room. The system can connect existing cameras as well as new installations in wards, departments, and other key locations.
The Metropolitan City will maintain the confidentiality of all footage obtained through the system. The agreement is valid for one year and forms part of ongoing collaboration to develop and expand a technology-based system aimed at making Kathmandu more automated, safe, and organized.
Under the agreement, the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) will be used for the CCTV surveillance rooms of the Metropolitan City, ward offices, and public places.
