Electricity Authority Mobile App Hacked, Hacker Group Demands Durga Prasai’s Release

Kathmandu: A hacker group has claimed to have hacked the Nepal Electricity Authority’s mobile app. The group, calling itself Nepali for Nepal, has taken control of the app and demanded the release of controversial medical practitioner Durga Prasai, who is currently in custody.

A banner demanding Prasai’s release appears on the slider of the app’s homepage. The notice, addressed to the “interim government,” demands Prasai’s release within 24 hours. It also warns of a “cyber protest” if the demand is ignored. The hacker group claimed responsibility through the messaging app Telegram.

The hacker has posted a video on Telegram showing that he has admin-level access to the app. The video shows full access to the app’s content management system, including the dashboard, notification panel, blog section, and complaint view section. The group also appears to have access to features such as charging stations, information modules, app management settings, user details, and user-submitted suggestions.

Earlier, the same group carried out a cyber attack on the website of the National Identity Card and Registration Department. The website, which remained blocked for a period, is now back online. The group, also calling itself the “Research and Analysis Organization of Nepal,” has warned that it will attack other government websites as well.

Meanwhile, the Electricity Authority has denied that its app was hacked. Authority spokesperson Sarbajit Kumar Chaudhary said that system upgrade work is ongoing on both the website and the mobile app. “We issued a notice a few days ago about maintenance, and that work is still underway,” he told TechPana. He said further study is being conducted on the incident.

The Authority had issued a notice on 13 November stating that services would be disrupted for 24 hours on 15 and 26 November due to system upgrades. However, days after the scheduled period, a hacker group was found to have placed the banner on the app. Based on the public link shared on Telegram, it appears that the backend image of the authority’s system was replaced.
