Free Body Freezing Service Helps 556 Families in Two Years in Dhangadhi

Kathmandu: Dhangadhi Sub-metropolitan City has provided free body freezing services to more than 556 families in the past two years. Through this campaign, which began on 27 November 2023, the sub-metropolitan city has helped preserve 556 bodies until Thursday.

When someone dies at home, the sub-metropolitan city provides this service free of charge to keep the body safe until family members and friends living abroad or far away arrive for the last rites.

Mayor Gopi Hamal said the service was started to ensure that children living abroad can see their parents’ faces one last time. “Children go abroad to give happiness to their parents, but some do not get to see their parents’ faces. Even if death cannot be avoided, we started the free service so they can see their faces at least one last time,” he told TechPana.

How To Avail The Service

The sub-metropolitan city has mobilized the city police 24 hours a day to provide services. Residents can contact the toll-free number 18105000090 or 091-590690 to provide information.

Once the information is received, the city police transport the body cooling machine to the concerned house through a small truck and install it. After the cremation is completed, the police bring the machine back.

In addition to the cooling service, the sub-metropolitan city has been transporting bodies to the ghat through a hearse, providing Rs 5,000 to permanent residents for funeral expenses, and offering a salute to the deceased. So far, the city police have transported 654 bodies to the ghat.

Started with two machines, the service has now expanded to all 19 wards with six machines. A team of 85 city police members is deployed in three shifts and providing services under the slogan “Har Ghadi Nagar Prahari (Every Hour City Police),” said city police constable Nawaraj Pandey.
