Smriti Timalsina Questioned Over False Claim of ‘China Blockade’ on Nepal

Kathmandu. The police have interrogated Smriti Timalsina, coordinator of ‘Gen-Z Red Force Nepal’ affiliated with the Nepal Communist Party (NCP), regarding the spread of a misleading video with baseless claims that China had imposed a blockade on Nepal following the appointment of Home Minister Sudhan Gurung. 

Following news coverage in several media outlets that Timalsina had been taken into police custody for opposing the government, the District Police Range, Bhadrakali, denied this claim. The spokesperson of the office, Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Kumar Bhattarai, stated that the main reason for the interrogation was the dissemination of misinformation.

SP Bhattarai stated that Timalsina was called in on Tuesday only to clarify her statement, as she had spread false and provocative information on social media claiming that China had imposed a blockade.

 “It appears that Smriti Timalsina posted misleading content stating that China had imposed a blockade. She was only called in to clarify her views on this matter and to ask why she did so. After a routine inquiry, she has returned home,” he said.

According to the police, Timalsina was not given any written form to fill out, and there are no requirements, such as obtaining approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs, before making videos in the future. “However, the claims made in some media that forms were filled out or that obtaining government approval is a must for creating videos are false,” Bhattarai added.

Earlier, the claim that was spread on social media stating that ‘there was an undeclared blockade after Home Minister Gurung visited the China border’ has been confirmed as misleading by the TechPana FactCheck Desk. The police have also urged not to circulate false information that could affect diplomatic relations with the neighboring country.
