Ncell CEO Announces $250 Million Investment Plan for Nepal’s Technology Sector

Kathmandu. Michael Foley, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ncell, has said Nepal faces a significant gap in communication technology and that the company is prepared to invest up to 250 million USD (around 38 billion Nepali rupees) to help bridge it.

Speaking at a program organized by Bhrikuti Media on Saturday, Foley stated that Ncell is ready to make the additional investment if it receives the necessary approvals from the government and regulatory authorities.

Foley noted that while global markets are already moving towards 6G, Nepal is still reliant on basic technologies. He said millions of users continue to depend on 2G devices and that the country’s 4G network remains relatively weak, adding that digital connectivity has become a fundamental requirement for development.

He also expressed concern over delays in regulatory approval, stating that Ncell has applied three times for permission to test 5G technology but has yet to receive clearance. According to him, the company aims to deploy a standalone 5G network in Nepal to deliver higher-quality services rather than a limited or transitional version.

Foley said Ncell remains financially strong and is prepared to invest significantly to address existing technological gaps and build new capabilities within its network. He added that the proposed investment of 200 to 250 million USD would focus on modernizing infrastructure and improving service quality, pending approval from authorities.

Highlighting the broader economic impact, Foley argued that robust digital infrastructure is essential to attract foreign direct investment and support the government’s economic growth targets. He said strengthening connectivity would also help create opportunities for skilled youth within the country.

Foley emphasized that sustainable economic transformation requires coordinated efforts between the government nd the private sector. Pointing to Nepal’s geography and youthful population as advantages, he urged stakeholders not to delay in adopting emerging technologies.
