Kathmandu. Nepal Police has warned of legal action against individuals using artificial intelligence (AI) to create and circulate images and videos featuring police uniforms, handcuffs, or arrest scenes for spreading misleading content.
In a video released on Saturday, the police said the growing trend of digitally generating such visuals on social media is illegal and punishable under prevailing laws.
In the video, police inspectors Kalika Karki and Buddhiprasad Subedi said the misuse of police symbols through AI tools has increased recently, noting that unauthorised use, alteration, or misrepresentation of police uniforms constitutes a legal offence.
They added that police uniforms are not merely attire but represent service, security, and national duty, urging responsible and ethical use of AI technology.
Authorities have also observed a rise in AI-generated content depicting staged arrests or misleading scenes involving police personnel, often circulated alongside rumours of real-life arrests on social media.
The police have cautioned that individuals involved in creating or sharing such content may face legal consequences.
Techpana has also been actively fact-checking and verifying similar AI-generated misleading visuals circulating online.
