Smart Travel Begins as Namaste Pay Launches NFC Metro Card for Cashless Mayur Bus Travel

Kathmandu. Digital payment platform Namaste Pay has launched an NFC-based Metro Card service in collaboration with Mayur Transport, allowing passengers to pay bus fares digitally while traveling on the Machhapokhari–Dhulikhel route.

Under the new system, passengers traveling on Mayur Transport buses from Machhapokhari in Kathmandu to Dhulikhel in Kavre can use NFC Metro Cards to pay fares contactless.

According to Namaste Pay spokesperson Shweta Bagla, the company has already installed smart Point of Sale (POS) machines on 25 Mayur Transport buses, with the service becoming operational from Monday. The company also plans to expand the system to additional transport operators in the coming days.

To access the service, passengers must download the Namaste Pay app from Android or iOS platforms. Beginning May 17, users will be able to apply for an NFC Metro Card directly through a dedicated feature available on the app’s home screen.

Users can select a preferred pickup point within the app to collect the card. Namaste Pay said collection centers will be established near bus stations along the Machhapokhari–Dhulikhel route, with nearby shops also being designated as pickup locations through separate agreements.

After receiving the card, users must load funds through their Namaste Pay wallet. Currently, up to Rs 5,000 can be stored on a single Metro Card.

During travel, conductors will scan the NFC card using the onboard POS machine. After entering the passenger’s boarding and destination points, the system will automatically deduct the applicable fare based on official rates and generate a printed ticket.

The company said the system ensures passengers are charged only for the distance traveled and allows flexible boarding and drop-off along the route.

In addition to digital fare payments, the Namaste Pay app also provides live bus tracking for vehicles connected to the NFC Metro Card system.

Namaste Pay said the initiative aims to promote technology-driven and cashless public transportation in Nepal.

“This collaboration with Mayur Transport is just the beginning,” spokesperson Bagla said. “Our goal is to expand technology-friendly transport services across the country in partnership with other transport operators.”
