NTA to Form Study Committee After Analyzing Serious Issues in Telecom’s Mobile Data Service

Kathmandu: Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) has launched an investigation after the disruption for nearly four hours in Nepal Telecom’s mobile data service on Monday afternoon. That same day, NTA Chair Bhupendra Bhandari issued a directive to its Monitoring Division to conduct a detailed inquiry into the disruption.
NTA Director and Spokesperson Min Prasad Aryal confirmed that the relevant division has been instructed to investigate the problem. “We’ve already directed the concerned division to examine the root cause of the issue affecting this essential service. They have begun taking action. We’ll determine the cause based on their findings,” Aryal said.
Following an initial internal briefing from the Monitoring Division, the NTA leadership is preparing to form a study committee to further investigate the issue, which stemmed from a malfunction in Nepal Telecom’s core billing system. The Authority has decided to include technical experts in the committee to pinpoint the cause of the outage.
The mobile data services were disrupted for nearly four hours due to a critical failure in the billing system. While the company claimed the issue was related to 4G and VoLTE services, data connectivity across the country was affected from 1:45 PM to around 6 PM.
As a result of the billing glitch, users received incorrect SMS alerts stating that bonus data recharged via Telecom’s shortcode 1415 had expired. Some also reported messages saying their data packs were no longer valid.
Nepal Telecom did not provide any explanation until 4:26 PM, when it posted on its official Facebook page to inform users about the disruption, which had begun at 1:45 PM.
The disruption has highlighted persistent issues with Nepal Telecom’s unreliable billing system. The company’s billing system procurement has long been mired in controversy, and a new procurement contract has stalled in recent months due to corruption investigations.
