Kathmandu: Ashish Adhikari (name changed) from Rupandehi is in the sixth semester of his Electrical and Electronics diploma under CTEVT. His fifth-semester results, from the Korea Nepal Polytechnic Institute, were published on Wednesday.
When he saw them, he was shocked. According to the results, he failed the theory of Power Electronics. He said, “I have scored more than 70% in all four previous semesters. I cleared them all in the first attempt. This time too, I had written well in the exam.”
Ashish is dissatisfied, saying the marks do not match his performance. “If it had been another semester, I would have accepted the result and reappeared. But I gave a good exam this time and still failed. By taking the back exam, I will lose a year.” He added that he is more worried about wasting a year than the failed grade itself. “Not just me, many of my friends’ results have been ruined.”
In Aurhiya, Kapilvastu, 14 students from Nepal National Secondary School appeared for Civil Engineering exams. In the results released by CTEVT on 6 August, not one student passed.
A student from the school said, “I have been staying with three friends just to study. The sixth-semester exams start from the 15th. Before that, the fifth-semester results came, and they were worse than expected. Now, I’m not even mentally ready for the upcoming exams.” He admitted one subject had gone poorly, “but I still failed in four subjects.” He added that some of his friends failed in up to six subjects.
In Biratnagar, Morang, students from Metropolitan Polytechnic School submitted a memorandum to CTEVT’s Sunsari office on Friday, demanding an immediate recheck of their answer sheets. They staged a protest after all 27 students from the school failed.
On Wednesday, CTEVT published the results of various engineering programs. In Civil Engineering, more than 72% of regular examinees failed. In Koshi Province alone, over 95% failed. In 17 out of 32 civil engineering schools in the province, the pass rate was zero.
In Electrical and Electronics, 83.53% failed. Out of 85 students from five institutions, only 14 passed, eight of them from Madhyamanchal Regional Engineering College did not pass. In Electrical Engineering, five out of 23 institutions recorded zero pass rates. Out of 493 examinees, only 111 passed, a failure rate of 77.48%.
Students across CTEVT programs are expressing outrage, saying the results are unexpected. They have also questioned CTEVT’s curriculum and educational quality, demanding a free recheck of answer sheets rather than just retotaling.
Khagendra Mishra, Principal of Kankai Polytechnic Institute in Jhapa, said the results were “unexpected” after all 20 of his students failed. “Two or four failures are normal. But this is beyond expectations,” he said. Mishra added that CTEVT should have deployed experts to check answer sheets. “The process should have been completed thoroughly before publishing results. If the investigation shows otherwise, action should be taken.”
He recalled a similar issue in Chemistry a few years ago. “Many students who failed had 18 marks, the exact pass mark, out of 24. The problem occurred across the province but no one acted. In the end, students had to take the back exam.”
At Ratna Kumar Bantawa Polytechnic Institute in Ilam, all 38 Civil Engineering students failed. School head Homanath Adhikari said he verbally informed the Examination Controller’s Office. “This batch had good results earlier. Now almost all have single-digit marks, even the toppers. I suspect an issue in the examination itself.”
Umesh Prasad Kharel, Director of CTEVT Koshi Province, said the matter is outside his jurisdiction. “Teachers and students are filing applications saying results were not as expected. We can only forward the matter to the center.” He expects a decision from the central office in a few days. “More than 95% failing is surprising. Civil Engineering results are especially bad, not only in Koshi but also in Lumbini Province,” he said.
Meanwhile, Govinda Kumar Shrestha, Joint Examination Controller and Information Officer of CTEVT, said he could not explain the poor results. He advised dissatisfied students to apply online for retotaling within 21 days, paying the required fee. He clarified that CTEVT does not have a facility to recheck answer sheets.
