Minister Pun Directs NAST to Submit Plan to Become a High-Level Research Center Within a Week

Kathmandu: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Mahabir Pun has directed the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) to submit suggestions within a week to transform it into a high-level research center.

After a two-hour discussion and inspection of NAST’s laboratories on Wednesday, Minister Pun instructed officials to present a concrete plan for reform. Writing on Facebook, he said that NAST has well-equipped buildings and laboratories, and should make full use of its available infrastructure.

“Out of the total budget of Rs 370 million, Rs 270 million has been allocated for administration and Rs 100 million for research and innovation,” he wrote. “I have instructed everyone working there to submit suggestions within this week on how to make NAST a high-level research center.”

Minister Pun also held discussions with the Education and Human Resource Development Center and the Curriculum Development Center on the same day.

According to him, computer science will be made a mandatory subject worth 100 marks in grades 9 and 10 starting from the upcoming academic session. For this, he has instructed the relevant authorities to develop the necessary curriculum.

He also directed the Education and Human Resource Development Center to design programs that promote the creation of digital learning materials for online education.

Discussions were also held on matching teacher positions, merging schools with low student numbers, and formulating nationwide procedures for appointing qualified and competent principals in schools.
