Minister Ghising Pushes EV Charging and Induction Cookers to Boost Power Use

Kathmandu: Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure, Transport, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising said that efforts are underway to increase domestic consumption of the country’s electricity generation.

Speaking at a program held in Kathmandu on Tuesday to mark the 29th anniversary of the Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC), Minister Ghising said the government is prioritizing demand-side reforms to expand electricity use within Nepal.

He explained that the government has been promoting EV charging stations and induction cookers to encourage the use of electric vehicles and reduce dependence on imported fuels.

“Currently, we are consuming most of the electricity within the country and exporting the surplus to India and Bangladesh during the rainy season,” Ghising said. “But our priority is to increase domestic electricity consumption. For that, we aim to expand charging infrastructure and replace firewood and gas used for cooking with electric stoves.”

Minister Ghising said an action plan has been introduced to enhance energy efficiency, conversion, and domestic demand. He added that the government is ready to sign power purchase agreements (PPAs) with companies investing in wind energy, and has adopted a policy to connect solar energy to the grid and store it for better utilization.

Thanking donor agencies for their contribution to Nepal’s energy transition, Ghising said the scope of work at AEPC will be expanded in the coming years.

Speaking at the same event, German Ambassador to Nepal Udo Eugen Volz reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to support Nepal in sustainable energy development, livelihood improvement, low-carbon initiatives, and energy transition. Germany has long provided technical and financial assistance to Nepal’s energy sector.
