Kathmandu: The District Police Office, Kaski, has urged consumers to stay vigilant as online fraud cases have surged recently. To prevent cybercrime, the police recommend using the reliable ‘cash on delivery’ (COD) method when purchasing goods online.
The office noted that consumers are often lured by unusually low prices, making them easy targets for scams. With such cases rising daily, the police have issued a public notice encouraging precaution.
10 Key Recommendations from Kaski Police:
The District Police Office, Kaski, emphasizes the following precautions to avoid online fraud:
-
Use cash on delivery (COD) whenever possible. Deal only with trusted sellers and be cautious of expensive goods offered at unrealistically low prices, as they may be scams or stolen items.
-
Do not share your mobile screen with anyone. Fraudsters may claim a transaction hasn’t arrived while accessing your account and OTP to steal money.
-
If someone contacts you on social media asking for financial help using a friend’s or relative’s account, verify directly with the person before providing any assistance.
-
Do not trust unknown individuals claiming to send gifts or valuable items from abroad and requesting customs duty payments. Do not transfer money under such claims.
-
If asked to pay tax because a parcel is “stopped” at customs or the tax office, contact the relevant office directly to confirm.
-
Be wary of social media job offers that ask for deposits with promises of high returns. These are often scams.
-
Choose a reliable agency for foreign employment. Make all transactions through banks with clear explanations of the payment purpose.
-
Use strong, unique passwords for social media and banking apps.
-
Do not accept friend requests from strangers. Avoid sharing personal information and do not fall for financial or emotional pretexts.
-
Do not answer unknown calls on social media or click unknown links.
