Bank Accounts Drained via SMS Alert Links, Nepal Telecom Warns Public

Kathmandu: Nepal Telecom has alerted the public that fraudsters are stealing money from customers’ bank accounts through messages sent from Alert IDs. In a statement, the telecom urged people not to open SMS messages containing suspicious links.

Recently, some customers received messages in English from various Alert IDs stating: “Dear valued customer, your Connect IPS account has been locked. Please verify to login and secure it.”

If users click the link and enter their Connect IPS username and password, fraudsters gain access to their bank accounts and steal money, Nepal Telecom said.

The company has also released a list of suspicious links being used for fraud and advised the public to ignore messages from unknown or suspicious sources.

Nepal Telecom further urged users to visit only official websites and verified social media pages (with a blue tick) for information about its services.
