Kathmandu: The story of a youth who can earn up to Rs 300,000 per month by sitting on the hills of Kirtipur with a laptop is not a fantasy but a reality, Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has said. Speaking at a program organized by the ‘Former Planner Forum Nepal’ on Monday, Minister Khanal said that the statement made in the past by Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa was not a joke and was based on reality.
While discussing the development of the information technology sector and the recent steps taken by the government to bring dollars into the country, Minister Khanal highly praised the contribution of youth involved in the sector. Recalling that even when youth demanded a $500 ‘dollar card’ facility about eight to nine years ago the state did not understand its importance, he said that IT companies are now allowed to take up to $20,000 to establish their branches or ‘bases’ abroad. He described this as a bold and positive step by the government.
Minister Khanal, citing the example of youth returning from various countries, including Australia, and working as ‘digital nomads’—tech professionals who can work from anywhere - in Nepal, said that if the government guarantees proper policies and security, more youth would be willing to stay in the country and earn foreign currency.
“Nepali youth working in Australian companies want to stay with their families and earn income in dollars from Nepal,” Khanal said. “Australian companies are interested in Nepal’s government policies and security. The government has dared to provide a facility of 20,000 dollars to reassure and support them.”
During his address, Finance Minister Khanal reiterated General Secretary Thapa’s statement and added, “The speech that Gagan Thapa ji gave about earning three lakh rupees a month with a laptop in the hills of Kirtipur is a ‘real story’. Many people may think that person is a ‘loafer’. But he is working as a remote worker somewhere. We have come this far after going through the situation of not getting a $500 card. The country should have such courage in some situations.”
He also expressed the state’s commitment to providing policy facilitation to encourage such workers further, saying that ‘remote workers’ living in Nepal and working for foreign companies are making a significant contribution to the country’s economy.
