#JusticeForInishaBK Trends as Social Media Demands Investigation into Surkhet Teen’s Death

Kathmandu. A hashtag campaign has started on social media regarding the death of a 16-year-old Inisha BK of Surkhet. It is alleged that BK was raped and murdered last Saturday. 

After this incident, several posts appeared on social media with hashtags such as #Justiceforinisha, #justiceforDalit, #justiceforwomen, #JusticeforInishaBK. Users on social media platforms such as Facebook, X, and TikTok are sharing posts demanding justice for her.

When searching ‘Inisha BK’ on the Facebook search bar, it appears under the‘popular now’ section. Many users are raising their voices for justice for Inisha using these hashtags. On TikTok, more than 800 videos have been posted using the hashtag #justiceforinishabk. Even without using hashtags, many posts are being shared, demanding justice for Inisha BK. 

Actress Barsha Siwakoti also posted a status on Facebook stating that the alleged ‘gang rape’and ‘brutal murder’ of Inisha has shocked society. 

She wrote, “The news of the gang rape and brutal murder of 16-year-old Inisha B.K. in Surkhet has filled my heart with deep pain and shock. Such an inhumane and cruel crime has shaken the very soul of our society. 

The perpetrators involved in this heinous crime should not receive any kind of protection; the harshest possible punishment must be ensured through strict and impartial legal action. Justice is necessarily not only for the victim but also for the entire society. #justiceforinisha 🙏🏻”

The newly elected Member of Parliament, Manish Khanal from Nawalparasi (Bardghat Susta East) Constituency No. 2, has also demanded justice for BK. Calling for a fair investigation into Inisha BK’s death,  he wrote on Facebook, “The safety and justice of citizens are the true standards of development. There must be a fair investigation into the Inisha BK murder case, along with assurance of justice for the victim. #JusticeforInisha”

16-year-old Inisha BK, who lived in Biratnagar-1, was found unconscious in the forest area of Sahid Park on Saturday (Falgun 23) around 9:45 in the morning. She was later taken to Province Hospital Surkhet, where doctors declared her dead.

Information Officer and DSP of the District Police Office, Surkhet, Mohan Jung Budha Thapa, said that after the incident, four minors were arrested and are being investigated in connection with the case. The post-mortem examination has already been completed.

The mobile phones of the suspects and the victim have been sent to the digital forensic laboratory. Samples have also been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for ‘toxicological’ and ‘bio-serological’ tests to determine the exact cause of the death. DSP Thapa said that the final conclusion will be drawn after comparing these reports with the postmortem findings.

For a detailed investigation of the incident, a team led by a police inspector from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) is heading to Surkhet. A separate investigation team has also been formed at the District police Office. 

According to him, preparations have been made to deploy a team from the Nepal Police Provincial Office in Nepalgunj to conduct polygraph tests and analyze call detail records, in order to strengthen the investigation.

What did the police’s initial investigation reveal?

According to police, the victim and suspected individuals are students at Usha Balbatika Secondary School in Birendranagar. Inisha and the 17-year-old boy, identified as the main suspect, were known to each other, police said. DSP Thapa stated that they met on Saturday as the school was closed due to the election. 

“They were found to have gone into the forest area about 30 minutes above the road. According to preliminary findings, they were alone at the location,” DSP Thapa said. 

Police said the girl lost a significant amount of blood and later lost consciousness. 

According to him, the incident occurred around 7 in the morning, and around 8 a.m., the boy called three friends asking for help to take her to the hospital. 

“After that, around 8:30 or 9 a.m., the three friends arrived. They also informed the local residents. The girl was brought down from the forest area to a place accessible by vehicle,” he said. 

The main suspect was taken into custody from the scene. Police later took the remaining three teenagers into custody after learning that they had also reached the incident site.

 He said that all four teenagers currently in police custody are 17 years old.
