Yango Driver Arrested for Harassing Female Passenger in Kathmandu

Kathmandu. A rider of the ride-sharing platform ‘Yango’ has been arrested for verbally abusing and harassing a female passenger after she refused to cancel her ride.  The accused, 43-year-old Kumar Shrestha, was taken into custody.  

Shrestha was taken into custody by a team from the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office in Teku on Sunday, following a complaint filed by the victim. 

The incident gained widespread attention after a video showing the driver behaving aggressively towards the passenger went viral on social media. 

 In the viral video, Shrestha is heard using obscene and offensive language while abusing.

According to the reports, the woman had booked a ride, and Rider Shrestha accepted the request while driving the vehicle. Upon reaching the location, the rider pressured the young woman to cancel the ride, saying that the destination was not suitable for him. However, when the young woman said she was in a hurry and refused to cancel, asking, 'Why did you accept without checking?' an argument started between them.

 The dispute intensified after the driver noticed he was being recorded. Claiming that the young woman called him 'crazy,' he displayed behavior as if he was about to assault her physically. Even though he didn't resort to physical violence, he cursed in vulgar language, saying 'I will hit you.' The video ends with the driver leaving the scene on his motorcycle while the young woman, expressing her anger, said, 'What would he have done if I had been alone?'

Following the video’s circulation, social media users strongly condemned the incident. Many mentioned the Nepal Police and the Kathmandu Valley Traffic Police, demanding action, saying, 'Even if it was the girl's mistake, it is a crime for the driver to use obscene language and mistreat her.'

Police confirmed that Shrestha has been transferred to the District Police Office Bhadrakali for further investigation and necessary legal action.
